Cobb Hill Cheese
Hartland, VT
Cheesemaking began at Cobb Hill in December, 2000. We have operated year round since then.
Cobb Hill Cheese is made with raw whole milk from the farm’s small herd of grass fed Jersey cows. We farm without chemical fertilizers, feeds or additives. We produce two kinds of cheese, Ascutney Mountain (an alpine cheese) and Four Corners Caerphilly using vegetable rennet.
Our cheese is sold on the farm as well as in many regional co-ops and small stores. We’re at the Norwich, VT Farmers Market on Saturdays from May through October. We ship wheels to specialty cheese shops and restaurants throughout the Northeast.
Atkins Farms
Amherst, MA
During the last forty years, there have been many changes here on the corner of Bay Road and Rte. 116 in Amherst, Mass. Concurrently, many changes have taken place in the world, in our own back yards and in our individual lives. Worldwide, our population has increased from 3 billion to 6.1 billion in the last forty years although the population growth is now slowing. U.S. life expectancy is rising and the hole in the ozone layer is shrinking. However, hunger still plagues many countries, and fresh water resources may be limited in the future as use escalates. The anniversary of John Kennedy's death was over forty years ago!
Back to our corner of the world, the very first retail building built at this location was started in June of 1962. The building would have been built the prior year, right after Howard Atkins purchased the land from Mr. Critchett, but when the 196l crop of apples froze, he delayed the construction for another year. When the 1962 crop of apples made it safely past the frost season, Howard put the building plans back into action. The steel-framed, one-story building , with five overhead garage doors installed (to allow trucks to be driven in for the winter months), cost almost twice the original estimate of $8000. The building was ready early in August, but Howard was not. Afraid that no one would show up for the opening day, Howard had his wife, Ruth, oversee the opening while he busied himself packing apples at the storage facility. The opening was a success and Howard was kept busy that day sorting peaches and apples for the retail business.

Bushy Hill Farm
Grandy, CT
Hal and Nora Law had long and successful careers before purchasing an abandoned and very run down farm. After thousands of hours of labor and many thousands of dollars, Bushy Hill Orchard is now a dream come true. It is one of the most technologically advanced orchards in the Northeast U.S.
In June of 2010 Allen and Becky Clark purchased Bushy Hill Orchard. Farming is an important part of their lives. Together Allen, Becky, their son Zach, and even the grandparents own and operate Goodyear Farms in Suffield and Griffin Farmstead Goat Dairy in East Granby. The orchard will be the main farm where you will find not only wonderful fruit but also anything you will need from spring to fall plantings, goat cheeses, and local Connecticut Grown Products.
The orchard is located on 75 acres of now restored Connecticut farm land. The first trees were planted in 1976 and opened to the public for U-Pick in 1980.
Bushy Hill Orchard contains approximately 15,000 apple trees grafted onto the English Malling IX rootstock. There are additionally some areas planted to Polish P22 and Russian Budagorfski 9 rootstocks. The result is that no apple tree at Bushy Hill Orchard is more than six feet tall. There are 750 trees per acre grown on the Pennsyvania Low Hedgerow four-wire trellis. In contrast, the old-fashioned spacing was about 40 trees per acre!! Recent scientific tests have shown that because the apples on dwarf trees receive much more sunlight, they both taste better and contain significantly more flavinoids, sugars and other nutritionally desirable elements.
Rockcity Coffee Roasters
Rockland, ME
Rock City Café began its life in 1992 as Second Read Books & Coffee, featuring used and new books and a busy coffeehouse, As the first coffeehouse/bookstore in Maine, Second Read quickly became an anchor of the downtown cultural scene. In 1999, we began roasting our own coffee under the brand of Rock City Coffee. By 2005, we had changed Second Read's name to Rock City Books & Coffee.
In the spring of 2011, we decided it was time to make another transformation. After selling the book portion of the business to employee Lacy Simons, who subsequently opened Hello Hello Books [link], we opened the new Rock City Café in a building next door to our former location. The Café is still a bustling gathering place for conversation, meetings, lunch, art and music, but we are now open during the evening, featuring a menu of delicious small plates, beer & wine, and music three nights a week.
